余嘗遊關西。詩近百餘篇。李仲鈞獨取箕子殿詩首二聯。曰。武王不憎受。成湯豈怒周。二家革命間。聖人無怨尤曰。此詩可駕古作。餘無足取。友儕疑其論太過。余惟李齊賢詩。拙翁全稿塗抹。只留應嗔宿客開門早。要看庭前雪壓松之句。李之詩才。可步大元。詩集不啻千萬篇。僕之學詩日淺。而關西詩數至少。且仲鈞詩眼過於拙翁。則取僕四句亦過分矣。歸而思之。李論甚穩。
내가 일찍이 관서(關西)를 유람하면서 지은 시가 근 100여 편이다. 이중균(李仲鈞)이 유독 기자전(箕子殿) 시의 첫머리인 무왕이 수를 미워하지 않았으니 / 武王不憎受 성탕이 어찌 주를 노여워했으랴 / 成湯豈怒周 상나라 주나라 혁명할 즈음에 / 二家革命間 성인은 원망도 탓함도 없었다네 / 聖人無怨尤 하는 두 연(聯)만 취하고, 말하기를 “이 시구는 옛사람의 작품을 능가할 만하고 나머지는 취할 것이 없다.” 하였다. 벗들은 그의 논평이 너무 지나친 듯하다 하였지만, 나는 이렇게 생각했다. ‘이제현(李齊賢)의 시를 졸옹(拙翁) 최해(崔瀣)가 전체 원고를 지워 버리고, 단지 ｢응당 성내리라, 유숙하는 손님이 일찍 문을 열어 뜰 앞에 눈이 소나무를 누른 것을 보려는 것을.〔應嗔宿客開門早 要看庭前雪壓松〕｣이라는 구절만 남겨 놓았다. 이제현의 시재(詩才)는 원나라에서도 활보할 수 있었고, 시집에 실린 시는 천만 편도 넘는다. 내가 시를 배운 것은 시일이 얼마 안 되고, 관서를 유람하면서 지은 시는 편수가 지극히 적으며, 또 중균의 시를 보는 안목은 졸옹보다 높으니, 나의 네 구절을 뽑아 준 것만도 분수에 넘는 일이다.’ 돌아와서 생각해 보니, 이중균의 논평이 매우 온당하였다.
Once, while traveling in P’yŏngan province, I composed close to a hundred poems. Among them, Yi Chongjun only chose the first two couplets of the poem “The Kija Shrine” 箕子殿, 武王不憎受成湯豈怒周二家革命間聖人無怨尤 King Wu had no hatred for Shou. How could Cheng Tang be angry at Zhou?When the Mandate was overturned between the two states, the sage bore no grudge against them.Yi said, “This poem can surpass ancient poems. The rest, however, are not worth taking.” My friends all thought his judgment was too harsh. But then I recalled Yi Chehyŏn’s poems, and how Ch’oe Hae 崔瀣 (1287–1340; sobriquet Chorong [Clumsy Old Man]) disregarded the entire manuscript and only kept these lines, 應嗔宿客開門早要看庭前雪壓松 He must be annoyed by the lodging guest who opens the door so earlyto see in the courtyard the pines weighed down by the snow. Y Chehyŏn’s poetic fame extended even to the Yuan Empire, and his collection of poems numbered in the thousands, if not tens of thousands. My own study of poetry has been brief, and the number of poems I wrote in P’yŏngan province was not many. Considering Yi’s poetic insight exceeds that of Ch’oe, I can only say that his selection of my four lines was undeserved. His judgment was more than appropriate.
