Yi Ch’ong, styled Paegwŏn, was the Third Secretary (pujŏng) of Mup’ung in Chŏlla province. After building a villa near Yanghwa Ferry, complete with small boats and fishing nets, he invited several poets. Together, they composed at least a hundred, possibly even a thousand poems. Among them, the two lines by Sin Yonggae 申用漑 (1463–1519) stood out, 沙暖集群鳥江平浮大陰 On the warm sand gather flocks of birds. On the calm river floats a big moon. These lines were regarded as the most excellent. Hong Yuson 洪裕孫(1431–1529; styled Yŏgyŏng) commended it, saying, “This man’s poems have the sound of High Tang poetry (sŏngdangun).” |
