丘仲仁號壺隱。喜仙而好名利。客死孤竹。余薄遊關西。到成川沸流江上聞訃。卽成四章而哀之。其一章云。壺隱先生我故人。聲名四十一年春。鉛埋汞沒胎光斃。墓木蕭蕭掩洞賓。二章云。治丹已領執銜轡。採藥天台暗有期。科業剝人今鬼錄。可憐鴻寶世空嗤。頗爲好事者所傳笑。

Korean Translation

구중인(丘仲仁)의 호는 호은(壺隱)인데, 신선을 좋아하면서 명리를 탐내다가 고죽(孤竹 황해도 해주의 옛 이름)에서 객사하였다. 내가 잠깐 관서지방에 놀러가 성천(成川)의 비류강(沸流江)에 이르렀을 때에, 그의 부고를 듣고 곧 시 4수를 지어 그를 애도하였는데, 첫 수에 이르기를, 호은 선생은 나의 옛 친구 / 壺隱先生我故人 이름 떨친 마흔 한 살 봄에 / 聲名四十一年春 글 재주와 빛나는 인품 사라지고 / 鉛埋永沒胎光斃 묘목만 쓸쓸히 동빈을 가렸도다 / 墓木蕭蕭掩洞賓 하였고, 둘째 수는, 단약을 배우는 데 이미 고삐 잡는 것을 깨달았고 / 治丹已領執御轡 천태에 약 캐러 갈 기약도 아득하여라 / 採藥天台暗有期 과업에 애썼으나 이제 저승에 갔으니 / 科業剝人今鬼錄 아, 임의 큰 뜻 헛되이 웃음거리 되었도다 / 可憐鴻寶世空嗤 하였다. 자못 호사가들의 웃음거리로 전할 것이다.

English Translation

Ku Chungin’s 丘仲仁 (15th century) sobriquet was Hoeun (Gourd Hermit). He delighted in immortals and coveted fame and wealth. He died on the road in Kojuk, Hwanghae province. While traveling in P’yŏngan province and crossing the Piryu River in Sŏngch’ŏn, Hwanghae province, I received news of his passing. I then composed four poems to mourn his death. The first poem reads, 壺隱先生我故人聲名四十一年春鉛埋汞沒胎光斃墓木蕭蕭掩洞賓 The Gourd Hermit,my good old friend!Your renowned fame has enduredfor forty-one springs.Lead is buried and mercury is gone,now that your fetal light has passed on. The trees by your grave rustle as they shade Lü Dongbin.The second poem reads, 治丹已領執銜轡採藥天台暗有期科業剝人今鬼錄可憐鴻寶世空嗤 The art of making the elixir, you had already mastered. The herb-picking trip to Mt. Tiantai, you had secretly planned.Dying while pursuing the civil service exam, your name is now on the list of ghosts. I pity the Great Treasurethe world jeered at in vain. He had become fodder for laughter among people fascinated by strange things.
