東峯金時習。讀書不拘文義。見大旨。味大義而已。余嘗作征夫怨十絶。和元遺山詩。其一篇曰。白草凋霜月滿空。年年鞍馬任西東。令嚴萬幕平沙夜。部伍相招鼓角中。東峯見而失笑曰。措大誤矣。豈有令嚴之時。復有相招之事乎。取詩小雅以示余。有曰。之子于征。有聞無聲。允矣君子。展也大成。余深服其言。歸而告于餘慶。歎服不已。

Korean Translation

동봉(東峰) 김시습(金時習)은 독서할 때에 글 뜻에 구애되지 않고 요지만 보고 대의만 음미할 뿐이었다. 내가 〈출정한 군인의 원망하는 노래〔征夫怨〕〉10수를 지어 원유산(元遺山)의 시에 화운(和韻)하였다. 그 한 편에, 온갖 풀 서리에 시들고 달빛 하늘에 가득한데 / 百草凋霜月滿空 해마다 군마 타고서 동서남북을 돌아다니네 / 年年鞍馬任西東 밤중 사막의 온 군막에는 군령이 지엄하여 / 令嚴萬幕平沙夜 북과 피리 울리는 속에 대오가 서로 부르네 / 部伍相招鼓角中 하였더니, 동봉이 보고 실소하며 말하기를 “선비께서 잘못하였소. 어찌 군령이 엄한 때에 다시 서로 부르는 일이 있겠소.” 하고, 《시경》〈소아(小雅) 거공(車攻)〉을 펴서 내게 보여 주었다. 그 시에 “이 사람이 정벌하러 가니, 소문만 있고 소리는 없도다. 진실로 군자여, 참으로 대성하리라.〔之子于征 有聞無聲 允矣君子 展也大成〕” 하였다. 내가 깊이 그 말에 감복하고 돌아와서 여경(餘慶)에게 말하였더니, 탄복하기를 그치지 않았다.

English Translation

When Kim Sisŭp 金時習 (1435–1493; sobriquet Tongbong [Eastern Peak]) read books, he did not confine himself to the literal meaning of specific passages but sought out the main points and savored (mi) the principles. I once wrote “Laments of a Campaigning Soldier” 征夫怨 in ten quatrains, matching the rhymes of Yuan Haowen’s 元好問(1190–1257; sobriquet Yishan [Yi Mountain]) poem. One of them said, 百草凋霜月滿空年年鞍馬任西東令嚴萬幕平沙夜部伍相招鼓角中 Above the frostbitten grassy plain, the moon fills the sky.Year after year, horsemen campaign east and west.Commands are solemn in thousands of tents in the desert at nights.Soldiers call each other amid the sound of drums and pipes. When Kim read it, he burst into laughter, saying, “You made an error. How can they call each other when the commands are solemn?” He then showed me the Xiaoya 小雅 (Minor Odes) of the Shijing (Classic of Poetry), which said, “When you go on a campaign, not a peep can be heard. Indeed, you will achieve great success.” Deeply impressed by his words, I returned and told Hong Yuson what had happened. Hong marveled at Kim without end.
