Before Yi Hwang started his official career, while traveling back and forth from the capital, he once visited Pŏmsa (Drifting Raft) Pavilion by the Yŏ River and there paid his respect to Kim An’guk. In his T’oegye chip 退溪集 (Collected Works of T’oegye), Yi wrote, “Ever since getting to know Kim An’guk, I began to understand the Way of the Gentlemen.” A monk from Yŏju with a poetry scroll came to pay respect to Yi at Kyŏngsang province. In the scroll, there were quatrains exchanged between Kim An’guk and Sin Kwanghan. Matching the rhymes of their quatrains, Yi wrote, Since the two elders wandered like immortalshow many years has it been?A monk came to see me on a day wintersweets are in bloom.Alas! Thinking of the former days’visitors to the temple,I shed my tears over the poems left behind now with a snow-white head.
