金提學淨。坐儻禍。杖流濟州。至海南之海涯。憩道傍老松下。吟成三絶。白松木而書之曰。欲庇炎亭渴死民。遠辭岩壑屈長身。村斧日尋商火煮。知功如政亦無人。又曰。海風吹過悲聲遠。山月高來瘦影疏。賴有直根泉下到。雪霜標格未全除。又曰。枝條摧折葉鬖髿。斤斧餘形欲臥沙。望絶棟樑嗟已矣。槎牙堪作海仙査。士林傳誦。莫不憐之。

Korean Translation

English Translation

Kim Chŏng 金淨 (1486–1521), Deputy Director in the Office of Royal Decrees (chehak), was punished during the literati purge. He was flogged and was exiled to Cheju Island. Arriving at the remote area in Haenam county in Chŏlla province, he had a rest under an old pine tree by the road. He composed three quatrains. He peeled off the pine’s bark and wrote the following poems on the white surface of the tree, 欲庇炎亭渴死民遠辭岩壑屈長身村斧日尋商火煮知功如政亦無人 Wishing to shelter the people dying in midday heat, you went far into mountains and valleys and there bent your tall body. The woodcutter comes daily to look for firewood to sell.No other person recognizes your meritlike the First Emperor of China. 海風吹過悲聲遠山月高來瘦影疏賴有直根泉下到雪霜標格未全除 An ocean breeze passes by, carrying your sorrowful cries far. The moon high above the mountain casts your withered shadow.Luckily, you have taproots that reach down to the spring. Snow- and frost-like disposition, you have not yet lost. 枝條摧折葉鬖髿斤斧餘形欲臥沙望絶棟樑嗟已矣槎牙堪作海仙査 Your branches are broken and your leaves wilted.An axe chops what’s left of you to make you lie in sand. Your hope of becoming a ridgepole, Alas! It is now no more. Should you become a wood raft, be a raft of an immortal in the sea!The poem was widely recited (chŏnsong) among the forest of scholars, and there was none who did not have pity on him.
