By nature, Yu Un 柳雲 (1485–1570; styled Chongnyong) was free-spirited and did not concern himself with trifling ethical matters. Once, he was appointed as a censor to Ch’ungch’ŏng province. Upon arriving at Kongju, he anticipated that a fine kisaeng would be sent to his lodging for the night. So he lay behinda curtain and waited. The provincial governor, however, believed that the censor must be different from other official guests. Fearing of offending the censor’s solemn dignity, he did not dare to send a kisaeng and just instructed a yamen runner to stand guard. Yu anxiously waited all night. It was quiet with no sound of human presence. The next morning, before his departure, Yu wrote the following poem on the bed screen, 公山太守怯威稜御史風情識未曾空館無人消永夜南來行色淡於僧 The prefect of Kongsan felt nervous about authority. The censor’s interest in romance,he had yet to grasp. In the empty guest house with no one, I endured a long night. The guest from the south now looks as dull as a monk. Everyone who heard the poem burst into laughter.
