One day, while staying in the palace on duty, Third Counselor (chŏnghan) Ki Chun 奇遵 (1492–1521) had a dream in which he traveled outside the capital. He was trudging through rugged roads, and recited a recent style regulated verse along the way. In this unfamiliar land, the rivers and mountains resemble those of my homeland. At the end of the world, I shed tears Leaning against a towering peak. Round clouds gather densely.Rivers close in.Ancient groves rustle.Cities lie empty.Country roads branch out, Stretching beyond the autumn grass.Homes in the distancebask in the setting sun.I sail ten thousand lito where there is no return boat, where the blue sea is boundless, and the letters cannot reach. Suddenly waking up, he remembered the dream and wrote the poem on the wall of the building. Not long after, during the Kimyo Literati Purge (1519), he was punished as a member of a faction. He was exiled to Ch’ungch’ŏng province and shortly after was sent to Onsŏng county in Hamgyŏng province. On his journey, he witnessed the very scenery described in his dream. He halted the horse, recited the poem, and sobbed sorrowfully. Those who accompanied him were all moved to tears. Arriving at Onsŏng, he soon received an order to end his own life. From this story, we can see that human affairs are all predetermined. The poem was widely recited (chŏnsong) among the forest of scholars, and all sighed in sympathy.
