All compilers of books must engage in a careful textual study. Only when there are no loose ends, should they make their works public. Magistrate of Kwangju, Pak T’aesun 朴泰淳 (1653–1704; styled Yŏhu), printed Hŏ Kyun’s compilation Kukcho sisan (Poems Culled from Our Country). In it, Sin Kwanghan’s seven-character regulated verse “Chuch’ŏn County” 酒泉縣 is attributed to Ki Chun. But in the original anthology, Ki’s poem precedes Sin’s poem. I think since Pak inaccurately added Sin’s name to his second poem, and this poem as a result was combined with earlier poems by Ki. The poem was already recorded in Sin’s own anthology and was made into a plaque and hung on a wall in his county. Such was the extent of Pak’s error. Moreover, Pak attributes the following seven-character quatrain, “A Poem on a Monk’s Scroll” 題僧軸, to Kwŏn P’il. Clouds scatter about the mouth of the mountain.Plants are full and green. When the night comes, incense smoke reaches the west side of the river. Then utterly drunk, I sing out loudand rejoin the bright moon.River flowers have all fallen. The cuckoos cry. But according to the old version of Kwŏn’s Sŏkchu chip 石洲集 (Collected Works of Sŏkchu), the poem in fact is by Yi Yŏng 李嶸 (1560–1582). Since the poem followed Kwŏn’s poems in the anthology, and Pak again mistakenly left out Yi’s name, the poem was tied in together with other poems by Kwŏn. Pak did a truly careless job. Moreover, what he identified as Yi I’s poem “Stepping Out of the Mountain for the First Time” 初出山 is in fact a fake poem by Hŏ Kyun. Pak’s annotation said, “The poem is not included in Yi’s anthology because it appears to be in error on many levels, which is not difficult to understand.” Yet in his publication, Pak did not delete this poem and included this annotation as well. He was severely criticized for this, and the court eventually ordered the destruction of his book. All compilers of books should take warning.
