自古選詩者。非博識宏量。固難乎取舍精覈。近世。南壺谷龍翼。雜摭我東風雅。詩刪。詩話等書。且取近代諸詩。輯成一帙。名曰箕雅。自撰其序。歷論前輩所選之失。蓋自許其所選之精也。然以余觀之。取舍失於名實。好惡偏於親踈。未免為薰蕕錯雜。至於作者名姓。亦多錯錄。其中所謂閨秀趙瑗妾李氏。春日有懷詩。卽蘭雪軒許氏詩也。載於本集。其詩云。章臺迢遞斷膓人。雙鯉得書漢水濱。黃鳥曉啼愁裡雨。綠楊啨裊望中春。瑤階寂歷生春草。寳瑟涼閉素塵。誰念木蘭舟上客。白蘋花滿廣陵津。金萬英咏西瓜詩。卽玉壺子鄭星卿。兒時所作。亦載於本集。詩云。色似靑天初霽後。形如太極未分前。劈破丹心香露滴。相如從此懶尋泉。且權鞈殷山詩。首陽亦周土。薇蕨累淸風。若解殷山在。應先箕子東。此詩。不載於石洲五兄弟聯珠錄。一家諸孫。亦莫有知者。壺谷從何得之。而選入於此耶
Since ancient times, those who made poetry anthologies had to have depth and breadth of learning because of the difficulty of making concise and rigorous (chŏnghaek) selections about what to keep and what to discard. Lately, Nam Yongik assembled poems from books such as Ch’ŏnggu p’unga (Airs and Odes from the Blue Hills), Kukcho sisan (Poems Culled from Our Country), Tongin sihwa (Easterners’ Remarks on Poetry) and from others’ poem into a single volume under the title Ki a (Elegant Poems from the Land of Kija). In the preface, he discusses the errors found in earlier compilations of poetry, probably feeling confident in the meticulousness of his own anthology. Based on my observation, however, his collection contains errors in names and facts. In his likes and dislikes, he showed favoritism toward his relatives. He could not avoid mixing good and bad works, and even made the mistake of recording wrong names of authors on many occasions. One of the poems, “Feelings on a Spring Day” 春日有懷 which he attributes to Cho Ae’s concubine named Yi, is in fact a poem by Hŏ Nansŏrhŏn, recorded in her own collection. The poem reads, 章臺迢遞斷腸人雙鯉傳書漢水濱黃鳥曉啼愁裏雨綠楊晴裊望中春瑤階寂歷生春草寶瑟凄涼閑素塵誰念木蘭舟上客白蘋花滿廣陵津 The Zhang Terrace is far away,wrenching my gut.A pair of carps deliver me a letterby the Han riverbank. Orioles cry in the morning,sorrowfully in the rain.Green willows sway in the day,spring is in view.Jade steps are desolate,where spring grasses grow.Precious zither is quiet,idling in white dust.Who remembers the traveleron the magnolia boat?White duckweed blossoms fillat Kwangnŭng Ferry. “Watermelon” 詠西瓜, which he attributes to Kim Manyŏng 金萬英 (1623–1649), is in fact a childhood poem by Chŏng Haŏn 鄭夏彦 (1702–1769; sobriquet Okhoja [Master Jade Jar]) and is also recorded in his collection of writings. The poem reads, 色似靑天初霽後形如太極未分前劈破丹心香露滴相如從此懶尋泉 Your colors are like the blue skyjust after a rain has cleared.Your shape is like the Great Ultimatebefore it was separated.Cracking it open, I see a red heart,dripping sweet-smelling dews.Because of you, Sima Xiangrufelt lazy to search for fountains.Also, Kwŏn Hyŏp’s poem “Ŭnsan” 殷山, 首陽亦周土薇蕨累淸風若解殷山在應先箕子東 The Shouyang was also in the land of Zhou,where ferns tied up the cool breeze.Had they known that Ŭnsan was here,they must have first come to Kija’s East. is not recorded in the Yŏnjurok 聯珠錄 (Records of Stringed Pearls) by the five brothers of Kwŏn P’il. None of their grandchildren knows this poem, so where did Nam Yongik find this poem and included it in his anthology?
