| 萬曆庚申。余方廢錮。薄遊嶺西。客裡有一絶云。滿地殘花半作泥。夜來風雨暗前溪。望鄕臺上空怊悵。雲樹千重夢也迷。見者謂。此詩結句。語意凄悵。恐涉不祥。頗爲余憂之。或曰。雲樹千重。足見前途逈遠。有不盡之意。非不祥語也。其後數歲。余幸遭遇。宦業通顯。去今已十有五年矣。或者之言。殆驗歟 |

| 만력(萬曆) 경신년(1620, 광해 12)에, 내가 바야흐로 폐고(廢錮 종신토록 관직에 임용되지 못하는 것)된 상태에서 정처없이 영서(嶺西) 지방을 떠돌 적에, 나그네의 심경을 절구(絶句) 한 수로 읊기를,
땅에 가득 떨어진 꽃 반쯤은 벌써 진흙 / 滿地殘花半作泥 간 밤의 비바람 앞 시내에 요란했네 / 夜來風雨暗前溪 망향대 올라 서니 하염없이 슬픈 마음 / 望鄕臺上空惆悵 운수는 천 겹이라 꿈속에서 헤매누나 / 雲樹千重夢也迷 라고 하였다. 그런데 이 시를 본 이가 말하기를, “결구(結句)에 내포하고 있는 뜻이 처연(悽然)하고 암울하니, 상서롭지 못하게 될 분위기가 배어 있는 듯하다.”고 하면서 나를 위해 상당히 걱정해 주었다. 그러나 또 혹자(或者)는 말하기를, “운수 천중(雲樹千重)이라는 말이야말로 앞길이 창창(蒼蒼)하게 멀어 끝이 없다는 뜻을 그대로 보여 주고 있으니, 상서롭지 못한 말이 아니다.”고 하였다. 그런데 그 뒤 몇 년이 지나 내가 요행히 좋은 시대를 만난 덕분에 벼슬 길에 올라 현달(顯達)하게 되었는데, 그 시를 지은 것이 지금으로부터 벌써 17년 전의 일이 되었다. 그러고 보면 혹자(或者)의 말이 자못 들어맞았다고도 하겠다. |

| In the kyŏnsin year of the Wanli reign (1620; Kwanghaegun 12), I was just dismissed indefinitely from my office. While aimlessly wandering in Yŏngsŏ, I wrote the following quatrain, 滿地殘花半作泥夜來風雨暗前溪望鄕臺上空惆悵雲樹千重夢也迷 Fallen petals on the ground, a half had turned into mud.Winds and rains come in the evening. Darkness falls over the creek.Gazing afar at my hometown from the terrace, I am empty and gloomy.Amid a thousand layers of clouds and trees, my dreams also turn hazy. Someone who read the poem said, “The expression and meaning (ŏŭi) of the last line are sorrowful and disheartening (ch’ŏch’ang). I am afraid your road ahead won’t be auspicious.” He became quite concerned about me. But another said, “‘A thousand layers of clouds and trees’ clearly contains that the road ahead is far and boundless. These are not inauspicious words.” Several years after that, I met a good fortune and had a successful official career. It has already been seventeen long years. The other person’s words must have been an omen. |
